About Terrarium

A picture sits under a single coarse square. As you move across it, squares split into four and finer detail surfaces, so you uncover the image the way a recursive subdivision does, square by square.

  • Move to uncover. Passing the mouse over a square splits it, revealing what is hidden underneath.
  • It is alive. On its own, squares full of detail keep splitting and settled ones dissolve back, so the mosaic churns like a game of life over the image and never holds still.
  • Colour is the sound. Each square that is born sings: its hue picks the instrument, its brightness the loudness, its height the pitch. Dark areas stay quiet.
  • Bring your own. Drop an image onto the case, or hit image to pick one, and hear it come into focus.
